Memorization Builds Brains

    Charles attended his local gym every other day for months but nothing about him changed. He was no more fit and no more flexible than when he had first joined this ultramodern facility. To him it was a mystery! He attended the very epicenter of fitness and health so often that the front desk crew knew his name. He put in a full hour each weeknight. He put in two hours on Saturday. The other regulars knew exactly where to find him during his habitual visits. Charles made zero progress and saw no results but yet he continued to attend. His failure to make gains was no surprise to anyone who knew him. Charles refused to lift any weights, work on any cardio equipment, or take part in any swimming or cycling opportunities. 
    This sounds ridiculous. Charles paid the membership fee after extensive research looking for the right facility with the right coaches. He even bought a handsome exercise outfit which allowed full flexibility and to show-off any future gains. All this only to enter the gym and do nothing but see others lift weights, swim, exercise, climb, move, and stretch. 
    Charles attending an expensive gym for sizable parts of his week and doing nothing to improve his heart and muscles is very much like a student who plans to navigate 12+ years of education without once memorizing anything.
    Never being asked to engage one’s brain in this manner explains our public educational plight, at least in the U.S. though certainly the practice continues to spread to other nations. Never memorizing anything means that students live in the perpetual state of first steps and first impressions with no ability to climb the educational ladder to anything more complex. The brain is a muscle. It needs work and heavy lifting. Looking at charts, videos, and other students doing the work creates no benefit for yourself though it will certainly fill one’s day.
    Working memory, our superficial thoughts, takes any first exposure to new information and begins to engage the brain into a sorting exercise. The brain must decide if information needs to be stored short term, long term, or only briefly engaged and quickly forgotten. At best, working memory can keep around 7 items stored before everything gets jumbled. 
    If you look at your vocabulary flash cards for your Latin class only once or maybe twice before evaluating your retention, you’ll probably get around 5 to 7 things right and the rest wrong. If you enter a room to meet a bunch of new people, good luck. You might remember 5 to 7 names if the only thing people tell you is their name and nothing else like “nice to meet you” and “lovely day isn’t it!” Our brains are usually thinking up clever responses and we’ll not likely remember any names at all if we aren’t making a real effort. 
    Long term memory is what gives you the top score on your quiz and the ability to greet your new teammates when you see them again in a couple of days. Working memory is, at best, a tiny holding place for a handful of facts that will fade before the hour has ended. An educational system that is not built around developing long term memory skills condemns a student to live in mental deficit, like a case of amnesia. 
    Depending on how you prepare long term memory facts, you can store information in your mind for days to years to a lifetime. Learning the fundamentals of a subject for one year and then applying fundamentals the next as you add newer and more complex elements requires long term memory. This success requires memorization. If you’ve come from the vast majority of brick-and-mortar schools you’ve likely never been expected to memorize much. You’ve certainly never been taught methods to help yourself because “trendy education” has thought it old fashioned as our nation’s scores plummet lower than any other developed nation. The inability to develop topics over years means students limp through life with only a jumble of ideas temporarily stored in working memory and nothing more than hopes to look it up online.
    “When will we ever need algebraic formulae?” you might ask. Good luck moving up to more complex levels if you are juggling pages of facts you never learned but only saw. You can’t. Your brain can’t juggle working memory and the introduction of new concepts beyond that small group of 5-7 facts. You aren’t progressing because you are never learning. You are never learning because you have cognitive overload by asking your short-term memory to try to the job of long-term memory. Comprehension collapses. Your brain can’t juggle information and tires quickly, your learning slows, you get frustrated, and then you lose all motivation. 
    Listing the necessary outcomes of only using short-term working memory and never memorization sounds like a typical diagnosis of a learning disability: low comprehension, mental fatigue, delayed learning, frustration, disinterest, and low motivation. What if we didn’t need to hire all those classroom assistants? What if we started teaching students how to memorize and then expected them to progress beyond the basics by having long term memory functioning normally if not robustly?
    Let working memory do its job (juggling 5 to 7 new facts) but then move the important things into long term memory every night. The outcome makes an average student into a genius in today’s terms: increased comprehension (you memorized yesterday’s facts and can juggle the new ones today), increased mental stamina (you have sorted out how to process information efficiently and have confidence that you can keep doing it), faster learning (you don’t need to spend half your time looking up the things that you should have memorized but never did), and increased enthusiasm (look at that successful exam or project after the hard work paid off!)
    Having mastered what memorization can do for you, you get to move on to application (build that engine or complete that experiment or participate in that cool project), creation (apply what is known to new problems that must be solved), evaluation (swiftly sort out good ideas form bad ones to plan even better projects). 
    n the modern educational arena, too many have made a choice between memorizing a thing and understanding a thing. Use both as a tool to aid the other.

Don’t Let the Goldfish Win

It used to be when somebody wished to insult your ability to pay attention, they would say you have the attention span of a goldfish. Naturally this inspired a number of studies that found the average attention span of a goldfish is in the range of 9 seconds. That is indeed a very short period of time. Observing the life of a goldfish, you seldom see them enjoy good literature, long conversations, introspective journaling, nor expressions through painting or drawing. 9 seconds is just enough time to remember that some food was sprinkled in the fishbowl or to swim a different direction to avoid your grumpy goldfish roomie. Neural research has also been done on average humans. Dr. Amen of Amen Clinics, who knows more about brains than almost anyone, estimates that most people in the U.S. have attention spans in the range of 8 seconds long.

The Goldfish are Winning?

As we examine all the splendid things people have done with their brains over the course of history, we must come to the logical conclusion that the average length of the human attention span was once much, much longer because our lives depended on it. Carefully guarding livestock, conscientiously weaving cloth, crafting, sculpting, cooking, writing, gardening, preserving, and inventing new ways to do all of these things better require much longer attention spans than 8 seconds at a time. Spoiled by the luxury of not living minute by minute to survive, most of us have more free time than our ancestors.

With free time came entertainment. A zillion things to grab our attention but very few things hold our attention. The luxury of the modern world makes it possible to survive a distracted lifestyle, mostly unharmed by our lack of attention. Some of us can afford to bounce back and forth between entertainments while we wait for our food to be delivered or our appliances to do the hardest chores. An attention spans less than that of a tiny fish seems like a setback in human progress. How do we do better?

Read Don’t Watch

The current generation typically doesn’t enjoy reading that much because it is difficult for them to maintain focus long enough to become engaged in a good story, much less good information. The average reader needs around 30 seconds just to read this far in this blog. Many will have stopped reading or have gotten distracted several times already. Consider the implications of how much educators might expect students to accomplish in a single assignment!

Around a third of people under the age of 20 consider themselves avid readers but admit that they typically read eight or fewer books per year even though they are enjoying a period of life that is uniquely suited to reading books as students. Self-described avid readers from older generations easily consume roughly twice as many books per year even with a more demanding schedule. Today, average high school students in literature courses with comparatively moderate reading assignments are overwhelmed by what would have been considered light reading five or certainly ten years ago. Most high school students never complete a single book and even fewer college students. Literacy is sliding backwards.

Reading for pleasure is the best test for a strong attention span. If you’ve never developed the habit, you should. You will at once encounter two surprising facts about yourself. First, you’ll discover that at first you will struggle to read for longer than a minute without getting distracted, even when you are reading a subject of interest to you. Extended reading is a muscle that must be worked and developed. Second, you’ll discover that once you can start reading with intensity, your life will be greatly improved. Deep engagement in excellent storytelling is deeply rewarding. Watching a story or hearing a story doesn’t work the same part of our brains as reading a story. Challenge yourself to consume entertainment in book form instead of screen or audio form.

Screen time (short-form entertainment, apps, games, TikTok, movies) have been designed for—and are much to blame for—the attention span crisis. Programming produced today is intentionally built around our 8 second attention spans to recapture our focus every few seconds with sounds, lights, and sound. “Older” movies from even a decade ago are considered unwatchable without the constant flash and glitter so there’s your answer about why companies remake so many classics. Recorded media is a little bit better (music, podcasts, books “on tape”) but still must multi-task instead of focus attentively. To extend your attention span, read rather than watch and if you must, listen with focus.    

Green Entertainment

I hope you like this term because I just made it up. Green entertainment always builds longer attention spans. How well does your soccer match go if the goalie has an eight second attention span? How does your hike progress if you can’t recall which direction to walk after a short break? How’s the chess match with your sibling turn out if you are staring at your phone instead of planning your next move? All of these are unplugged “green” entertainments.

If you grow your attention span simply by engaging in team sports, mentally stimulating logic games, gardening, hiking or a zillion other engaging tasks, you also enjoy the side benefits and gaining new skills, gaining physical strength, and maintaining appropriate distance from the snack drawer in your house. Want to double all of that benefit? Engage in green entertainment without electronic input of any kind. Yes, this means you leave earphones and devices at home. If you bring your phone “just so you can play some music” you’ll fall back into engaging mainly with your phone instead of your teammates or task. Engage your focus fully instead of splitting it with recorded media.    

Memorization Isn’t a Dirty Word

If you hang out in modern educational circles for even a few minutes, you’ll get hit with snarky comments about any educational approach that forces children to “merely memorize” material. Initially this was a reaction to approaches that never ventured beyond basics when the basics were the periodic table, the U.S. presidents, or the mathematical formulae of algebra or geometry. Sure! What’s the point of memorizing these things if you go no further? At some point, memorization was dismissed entirely, not because it is a thing that won’t serve us well as we educate ourselves throughout our lives, but because memorization became impossible in a world in which students have a shorter attention span than a goldfish.

Memorization is an excellent way to build your own attention span, but it is also a necessary skill to master anything complex. I assigned memorization tasks to my elementary age children to build that muscle. Do they still remember those poems, presidents, or geography? Probably not but when they move into the logic stage around age 13 and the rhetoric stage around age 16 or 17, they will prosper greatly having built that mental muscle and never letting it atrophy throughout life. Learn how to fill your brain with the intellectual ammunition you need to pursue more complex subjects.

Make or Break College Preparedness Skills: Subject Mastery

Subject mastery isn’t usually something people think about during middle and high school years. At least for many, a modern high school education is nothing more than a mad dash to complete a list of class hours served before we hurry off to complete the next list of hours to serve. Does everyone need the same semester of time to learn algebra or biology or French? There’s nothing magical about a semester on one subject, or a week of classes, or an hour of lecture. Some students can master the material in a fraction of the time, others need triple with a dollop of review mixed in daily. If a certain subject is poorly presented—for any variety of reasons—all the time in the world won’t help bored students. 

Instead of the time-served approach (exactly like a prison sentence ) what if we return to a subject mastery approach. To do so, students need a few basic learn-how-to-learn skills that have fallen out of favor. Memorization, for example, has been tossed out in favor of “subject tools.” Mainstream educators argue that students simply need to know how and where to access the information they need to complete their work. In the modern world, they argue, it isn’t necessary to memorize the periodic table, the anatomy of a cell, or Latin verb forms when one can just look online. Imagine giving a baby a dictionary rather than expecting him to form new words for himself. Requiring a child to swim laps before she can kick-and-paddle is a cruel recipe for disaster. Telling a student to rely on “subject tools” year after year is equally cruel. 

But, one might argue, if a child isn’t going to become a biologist, Latin teacher, or physicist, does she really need a storehouse of memorized data to make progress in science, language, and math? Children will never one day become any of these things without memorization, and we wouldn’t want them to. Consider the difference between a memorized speech and one read from a teleprompter. An actor reading lines from cue cards can’t compare with one who memorized his lines. Your heart surgeon shouldn’t be searching subject tools while you are under her knife. A concert pianist never performs with sheet music. Your physical therapist should already know how to improve your poor swollen knee without a fast web search. 

Memorization is essential, normal, and not all that difficult once you get the hang of it. There are dozens of techniques for subject mastery that will help anyone do it well at any age. Here are just five methods that will work for anyone mastering anything.      

Write it out 

Qui scribit bis legit, “He who writes learns twice.”

The act of writing helps us remember. You can master a lot of information very quickly just by writing it out a couple of times. Take notes while listening or reading to cut study time down considerably. A student activates all mental muscles when pen is put to paper. Sight, sound, higher reasoning, analysis, and coordination all work together to help the student remember the material. Transcription is still an excellent way to teach spelling to younger students for this reason. Some teens lament they hate taking notes, but I know firsthand how information retention improves just by helping them build this skill.  

When it comes to note-taking, the magic only happens when pen or pencil hits paper. I don’t care if your handwriting is messy. Taking notes is the real secret. No one cares how they look.

Involve all your senses

Good note taking habits make mastery easy because multiple senses are put to work. All effective study techniques involve more than one sense. When I ask a young student to “study” for an exam, he’ll likely flip open his book and stare at the words, hoping they will soak in. This is an exercise in futility. Teach  your young ones how to study actively. Tell them to try a variety of approaches including reading it aloud, writing it, drawing it, dancing it, singing it. Flash cards are still a powerful tool simply because they involve more than once sense. If done well, flash cards are portable, cheap, and used by subject masters worldwide. 

Teach it

When I was in graduate school two of my fellow students had been teaching high school Latin for years. Though they were proficient in Latin when they started their teaching career, they had become excellent at it while teaching it at the high school level. The rest of us trailed behind by comparison. This principal applies to every subject and is one of the best perks of home education, especially at the high school level. We adults get to relearn all sorts of forgotten tidbits as we teach them to our children. When a big sibling instructs a little brother one of his favorite subjects, he has the chance to become exceptional at that subject. The practice of carefully explaining and illustrating anything makes one more proficient at it which is why assigning presentations is a good idea. Parent educators with large families shouldn’t feel bad about employing older siblings to educate younger ones within reason. They will gain as much as they give. If you have an only child, just ask her to teach the material to you or a friend.

Mix it up

Even the best study method can grow stale if used in isolation. Try a variety of study techniques so that mastery will come quickly and painlessly. Everyone has a slightly different learning style. Chanting something might work well for one person but utterly fail for others. Try out games, flash cards, study partners, diagrams, silly rhymes, funny songs, chalk drawings on the sidewalk, play acting on videos, and even audio recordings: Be creative. 

Do a little every day 

Assiduus usus uni rei deditus et ingenium et artem saepe vincit, “Constant practice devoted to one subject often outdoes both intelligence and skill.” (Cicero)

The battle for mastery over a subject is not won in a single night. How many of us can recount times when we pulled all-nighters in college? If only I could get back all that sleep I lost on geology and Hittites, about which (I should point out) I recall very little. To every cram-session success story you’ll hear a dozen sad tales of poorly written essays, flagging health, and plummeting grades. Help your student learn how to study a little every day. 30 or 40 minutes of clearheaded memorization over a week’s time is far better than 4 fog-brained hours the night before the quiz. Sleep is as essential to organizing and storing data as are short effective study sessions. Alternating periods of both are key.

Students will argue they are preparing for an exam while their brains fight for concentration between notifications from social media, the urge to change songs on a playlist, and a hilarious video complete with ads. They think this works because they haven’t ever tried it any other way. Study sessions should be conducted in a distraction-free zone. Phones, internet, television, social media, friends, and siblings will always win the competition for brain time. Even little distractions like music will conspire to rob a student of subject mastery. 20 minutes with no distractions will be far more effective than 2 hours with them. Short effective study sessions with small rewards for success and a nice break in-between sessions.

So, even if you are educated now (as most are) under the time-served style, you can turn time into mastery with just these few special skills that will give your brain super-powers.

More Keys to Memorization

Homer, many would argue,* was the composer of the Iliad, an epic describing the almost final days of the Trojan war. I say “composer” nor writer because it is unlikely he had the luxury of being able to write down those 24 books of Greek poetry in dactylic hexameter since the Greek alphabet was still on the drafting table. Even if he was able to enjoy a beta test on that new Greek alphabet, he was blind, so there’s that.  Homer also composed and recited the Odyssey, the tale of Odysseus’ struggle to get home, in much the same way: all from memory. Both epics are 24 books written in meter (an arrangement of long and short syllabus) rather than rhyme.
*It is common for some to sneer that the Iliad and Odyssey were written by committee and perfected gradually over time rather than composed by Homer. First, I hate people that sneer but, second, I’ve never seen a convincing argument for how a committee would be able to write a better epic than a single author. These sneering types probably actually enjoy committee meetings. I bet they are the ones that regularly schedule them on Fridays before holidays. 

My point is this: Homer composed and recited and then MEMORIZED very long epics. As one might imagine, the need to memorize these epics (and others from this same early period) lasted quite a while until that Greek alphabet finished up the GoFundMe period and eventually launched. Even then, memorization continued. As an educated Greek or Roman person, one memorized parts, or even all of these epics, plus plenty more.

Memorizing fast amounts of information used to be standard. What happened to us? I think we forgot how the brain can do amazing things! While there are plenty of techniques you can use to memorize large quantities of information, I recommend two that everyone can use right away: writing and sleeping. Sleep is a fabulous study aid as long as you are not sleeping through the block of time scheduled study.

Rewire Your Brain Every Day 
Daily study alternating with other normal activities and a full night's sleep is the best stress-free way to soak up something complicated like Latin. I’ll use Latin as my example because I am a Latin teacher. These techniques work for anything complicated.  Try this: Spend about 8-12 minutes on vocabulary right before you go to sleep EVERY night. Your brain will work on it all night for you while you get some quality snoozing done. First thing in the morning, zoom through your deck once more. You’ll find your retention is pretty good! Your brain chewed on those facts for you all night.
Next, look at a chart of endings or forms that you taped to your bathroom mirror, just think them through while you are brushing your teeth. Then make yourself write them out quickly on a piece of scrap paper from memory. When you are riding in a car, spend 10 minutes flipping through flash cards or getting to know some noun or verb endings. Short study periods. No late-nighters.

LONG CRAM SESSIONS ARE A WASTE OF TIME
Cram sessions (when you sit for extended periods trying to ‘cram’ knowledge into your brain right before the test) don’t work. This rule is true for any complex body of knowledge like math formulae or points of history or scientific names for seaweed. Break up your study sessions into short periods (20 to 30 minutes) that are never longer than 45 minutes to an hour. Even on a day off, do 15 minutes of study (I like a ton of homemade flash cards or reading the chapter), but do this especially before you go to bed. I recommend that you involve as much writing and rewriting as possible. Got a stack of principal parts to learn? Tell yourself you can go to bed after you’ve written them all five times each.
People who play instruments are already familiar with this mastery method which is why musicians tend to be really good Latin learners. “Music makes you smarter” because it teaches you how to learn. Constant practice and repitition does the job in music and in language.

Use all your senses
You might be surprised to hear this, but I’m not a proponent of approaches that have you mindlessly chanting Latin all day. Most of those Latin learning systems don’t teach you much except for how to make an hour boring while your dog or cat looks at you funny. There IS, however, something to be said for employing multiple senses to memorize things. So chanting (or drawing, or writing, or listening) can be a great tool depending on your learning style. Most of us benefit from the simple act of writing things out because slowing the brain to carefully compose letters on paper is a big boon to mastery.
Just like you wouldn’t lift weights with only one arm, why study only one way? Work out different parts of your brain by using all your senses to memorize. Get creative:  Read, write, draw, doodle, pronounce, even act out your data list. Some attempt to write a story in Latin each week using that chapter’s vocabulary correctly. This technique can be done for most subjects.

Some create a pictorial system for flash cards, drawing a doodle for a term to help cement a concept visually. Others enlist a study buddy who is willing to help wflashcardssh cards on a regular basis. 
Remember, study some every day, write things out, and get a good night of rest. Your brain will double your efforts for you!

5 Best Ways to Memorize Tricky Things

Everyone Can Have this Superpower

Being able to memorize tricky things is better than a superpower. Only a few people get to have super powers and super suits, but nearly anyone can learn how to memorize tricky things. Sure, shape-shifting and mega-strength will make you more popular at parties, but memorization skills can take you from a mild-mannered denizen of dull to a rocket scientist, brain surgeon, brilliant botanist, or illustrious archaeologist.

Stylish modern pedagogy (a fancy term for teaching techniques) has turned a pouty frown towards this old skill, to the detriment of all. Teachers are taught to promote using “tools” instead of boring old-fashioned memorization. “Why waste brain space on memorization,” they argue, “if you can learn to master tools like computers and search engines?’

Can you imagine Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot asking the inspector to wait a few minutes while he checks his smartphone for information? Can you imagine your surgeon needed to pause every few minutes during a life-saving procedure to look stuff up online? What would have happened to the Iliad and Odyssey if Homer had not been able to memorize all those lines of epic poetry he'd composed in his mind?

This time of year at The Lukeion Project, we have our Witty Wordsmith, Latin 1, and Greek 1 students coming to--for many--their very first big memorization challenge. Most survive admirably. Others? Not so much! 

Fret no more! Here are the top FIVE ways to start memorizing tricky things right now:

1.  Repeat it

This seems like an obvious first step but if you are new to memorizing things you may be unaware of how MUCH repetition is needed. It takes, on average, 8 exposures to a new vocabulary word before you recognize it at all, much less with speed. Parents: If your learner sits down to a digital deck of vocabulary cards once and performs poorly on the quiz, there’s nothing wrong with your child’s brain but there is something wrong with her methods. It takes 5 to 10 repetitions with a hand-printed paper deck of flash cards that can be shuffled, flipped, and shuffled again to get the job done.

2. Sense it

Gone are the days when chanting alone helps anyone but the small minority known as audio learners. Audio learners were once the majority in the screenless, computer-less, YouTube-less days of yore. Visual learners rule today, and they need to use more senses, especially the ones that employ their eyes. If you have something to memorize, draw it, write it, speak it, illustrate it, journal it, demonstrate it.

3. Teach it

If you are a homeschool parent, this one should be obvious. If you have been homeschooling for a while you know how much you are learning (we’ll say “re-learning”) from all those years of being a passive listener in a school desk. Teaching tricky things to others will force you to learn those tricky things quickly. If your shy little thing doesn’t want to teach it, have him journal it, write out an explanation as if he were sending a letter to a student.

4. Shuffle it

Ever notice when you want to alphabetize things you find yourself singing the Alphabet Song? When our students learn Latin or Greek, they must learn a lot of information that is initially presented in chart forms such as the endings of a noun or the forms of a verb. We call these paradigms. Many learners can reproduce a paradigm perfectly but utterly fail to recognize the various components of that paradigm when translating an actual sentence or recognizing a word form joined to another Greek or Latin stem. Always turn the various parts of each chart into separate flash cards to aid the student in rapid identification outside of chart form. Students must recall the individual parts of a paradigm to make use of those parts. Therefore, we don’t promote a ton of those cute memorization songs. Students can learn a zippy tune but none of that helps if they can’t pull apart the smallest pieces of the puzzle.

5.  Visualize & vocalize it


Rapidly build your brain’s storehouse of tricky things by associating visual cues with new words. This can be as basic as making all nouns in your deck a certain color while prepositions are another. Artistic students might draw a little doodle. Anyone can pair a visual idea of a word or grammar concept as they memorize it. Don’t leave out SAYING the word to yourself even as you visualize it. In the first assignment of Latin 1 the textbook includes a Latin sentence with the Latin word labor. You would be surprised by how many students send me a distressed note complaining this word is not in their vocabulary list and they have no idea what it means. I invariably tell them, “say it aloud and see if that helps.” It always does.
